A discussion on different techniques for GIS data collecting, precision, accuracy and quality of database

Nowadays, is a common sense the importance of geotechnologies in urban planning, transportation engineering and other different areas of knowledge. The Geographic Information System (GIS) is one of the geotechnologies that has been used increasingly. The collection of information and creation of a database are the most expensive, complex and important task in a GIS project. The collection of information results from the direct and indirect measurement of the real world. The reason for creating databases is to register and the maintain the different sources of collecting information. This paper has the objective to present the different techniques for data collection as input in GIS, as well as a brief discussion on the cost associated with the collection of data. Furthermore, comments on precision, accuracy and the quality of database are given.

Physical Connectivity Between the NE Atlantic Seamounts

Within the Portuguese Exclusive Economic Zone, the Great Meteor and Madeira-Tore complexes are highly productive areas, which are likely to be classified as marine protected areas (MPAs) due to their ecological vulnerability. This was the main focus of the BIOMETORE project and, framed on it, the aim of the present study was to investigate the physical connectivity between both seamount complexes. Using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model coupled with the Connectivity Modeling System (CMS) (a Lagrangian tool), a series of experiments was conducted in order to determine the influence of the main oceanographic phenomena governing the area in: (i) the origin of the particles that reach each complex, (ii) their capacity to capture and retain incoming particles, and (iii) the physical connectivity between them as well as the intra-connectivity within each seamount system. Due to the geographical location of both groups of seamounts, the Azores Current (AzC) and its associated eddies were identified as the main transport pathways, its influence being stronger at intermediate waters and decreasing with depth. Notwithstanding, the Great Meteor and the MadeiraTore were mainly affected by the AzC southward and eastward branches, respectively, resulting in a non-significant connectivity between the two groups. Meanwhile, the inter-connectivity between seamounts slightly varied with depth at the Great Meteor complex while increasing at Madeira-Tore. In addition, the Plateau, Irving, and Cruiser (PIC) seamounts from the Great Meteor complex and Gorringe and Coral from the Madeira-Tore complex proved to incorporate the regional connectivity routes. Although containing the three smallest seamounts, Madeira-Tore showed the higher capturing capacity per square kilometer, highlighting the influence of the "sticky water effect." In the Great Meteor complex, the "seamount effect" seems to be the main phenomenon responsible for the greater retention and self-recruitment abilities of these seamounts. Agent based prototype for interoperation of production planning and control and manufacturing automation

This work describes a model for distributed dynamic Production Planning and Control (PPC) agent based system, which includes interoperation with manufacturing automation. It is presented a demonstration prototype involving distributed software agents and industrial equipment integration, which implements part of the developed model functionalities. Clients can send orders, and resources may apply for those orders fulfilment. Resources with orders allocated to, start automatically the required manufacturing operations. The prototype was implemented integrating several tools, including Lab VIEW and LEGO Mindstorms components. Promoção da ecoliteracia : virtualidades e limitações em textos para a infância

O presente texto pretende desenvolver uma breve reflexão e apontar alguns exemplos objectivos da concretização de estratégias discursivas / textuais promotoras (ou não) do que vem sendo definido como “ecoliteracia” (Capra, 2002), ou o ensino do pensamento ecológico a crianças e adultos, em textos destinados a crianças. Assume como conceito-base o “construtivismo linguístico” (Halliday, 2001 (1990)), ou a concepção da língua como sistema modelizante primário (Fonseca, 1992 (1987)), para identificar e explicar a operacionalização das referidas estratégias. Uma das linhas de desenvolvimento discursivo / textual a apontar sucintamente nos materiais seleccionados será a que dá corpo à problemática da conceptualização dos fenómenos do real como processos ou como estados, com as implicações que tal visão activa. Outra abordará condensadamente a problemática da agência, nomeadamente nas implicações que envolvem a construção discursiva de estados de coisas tendencialmente antropocêntricos ou tendencialmente ecocêntricos.This paper will present a short reflection focusing on the implementation of discursive / textual strategies which promote what has been defined as “ecoliteracy” (Capra, 2002), or the teaching of ecological thought to children and adults, trough texts designed for children. The basic concept is “linguistic constructivism” (Halliday, 2001 (1990)), or what Fonseca (1992 (1987)) calls language as a primary modelling system, in order to identify and explain how these strategies operate. There will be a brief discussion on the discursive / textual development of the selected materials. This will include real phenomena as processes or states with the implications these bring. Consideration will also be given to agency, namely the implications involved in the construction of discourse about the state of things which are either anthropocentric or ecocentric

Heterogeneidade enunciativa no discurso sobre o ambiente na imprensa portuguesa: funcionamento e efeitos do discurso directo

O presente texto pretende dar conta de algumas das dimensões mais relevantes da heterogeneidade enunciativa (Fonseca, 1992 (1989)) que marca as manifestações do discurso de imprensa sobre o ambiente. Centra-se sobre aspectos estruturais centrais e sobre o funcionamento pragmático-comunicativo do discurso directo, mecanismo citacional sistematicamente usado no corpus recolhido. Além de apresentar várias possibilidades de organização sintagmática, o discurso directo está ao serviço estratégico da projecção de determinada imagem do locutor do discurso citante, elemento essencial do exercício da influência que caracteriza largamente o discurso jornalístico sobre o ambiente.Ce texte veut montrer quelques-unes des dimensions pertinentes de l’hétérogénéité énonciative qui marque les manifestations du discours de la presse sur l’environnement. Il se centre en particulier sur des aspects centraux et sur le fonctionnement pragma-communicatif du discours direct, systématiquement employé dans le corpus. Outre la diversité de formes d’organisation syntagmatique, le discours direct sert stratégiquement la projection d’une image du locuteur, élément essentiel de l’exercice de l’influence qui caractérise le discours journalistique sur l’environnement.This paper deals with some of the most relevant dimensions of enunciative heterogeneity (Fonseca, 1992 (1989)) which characterizes the discourses on the environment presented by the press. The analysis focuses on central structural aspects and on the pragmatic-communicative functioning of direct speech, a citational mechanism systematically used in the selected corpus. In addition to presenting a number of possibilities for syntagmatic organization, direct speech is strategic in the projection of a certain image by the producer of the citational speech, an essential element in the exercise of influence which strongly characterizes the press discourse on the environment.El presente texto tratará de algunas de las dimensiones más relevantes de la heterogeneidad enunciativa (Fonseca, 1992 (1989)) que marca las manifestaciones del discurso de la prensa sobre el medio ambiente. Political voices in media discourse on the environment

Situando-se no quadro da Análise do Discurso, o presente texto descreve e analisa aspetos funcionais e configuracionais relevantes de um breve corpus de artigos jornalísticos contemporâneos que tocam a problemática ambiental. Assumindo que «a imprensa é, por excelência, o lugar do relato de discursos» (Duarte, 2003: 97) e que o ambientalismo se constitui nos espaços públicos como um dos “discursos públicos dominantes” (Jung, 2001), ou seja, os discursos significativos na configuração das experiências “em segunda mão” mediadas pelos meios de comunicação social, com capacidade de intervenção social transversal não negligenciável, identifica alguns dos mecanismos mais salientes sobre os quais este tipo de discurso se constrói, nomeadamente a interdiscursividade e o relato do discurso de atores políticos. Pretende, desta forma, constituir um contributo válido para a caraterização da retórica ambiental na imprensa generalista portuguesa contemporânea, numa época em que o ambientalismo é um discurso fortemente operativo na esfera pública nacional.Within the framework of discourse analysis, this text describes and analyzes relevant functional and formal aspects of a brief corpus of media contemporary articles on environmental issues. It specifically examines how the journalist creates/expands a conflict between the speech of the Minister of the Environment and a common voice, implicitly or explicitly mentioned, and the way these texts provide the public with a fragile credibility of politicians. Avaliação pelos pares com recurso a um grupo Web

Descreve-se, neste trabalho, uma experiência de avaliação pelos pares realizada com recurso a um grupo Web e baseada em duas fases, uma formativa e outra sumativa. Este processo de avaliação, exigiu dos alunos um comportamento mais activo, que conduziu a uma superior responsabilização e identificação com os resultados e com os objectivos de aprendizagem. Discurso, cognição e prática social na infância

O estudo de que este texto dá conta procura fazer uma descrição-explicação de mecanismos discursivos e representações mentais presentes num corpus de textos produzidos em contexto escolar por crianças de 8-13 anos, partindo do incontestável ponto de vista da vocação discursiva da língua, assumindo a prática linguística contextualizada como manifestação e processo de cognição e de prática social. Esta abordagem desenha um quadro de referência onde a linguagem assume o papel de mediação entre o homem e o mundo (que integra a mediação entre os homens, a interlocução, o dialogismo), permitindo e condicionando a apreensão dos "objectos da realidade" sob a forma de representações mentais. A actividade discursiva só pode constituir-se como referência a esse mundo intelectivamente ordenado, linguisticamente conceptualizado, produto de uma cognição que é individual mas também marcadamente social
